Bronze Metal Clay

(these notes are based on documentation written by Colleen White)

Bronze clay is made from particles of bronze mixed with a binder. The binder burns off during firing and you are left with a piece of bronze in your design. It shrinks about 28% during drying and firing, so take this in consideration when planning your project.

The clay will dry out very quickly if left out in the air, so always put any clay you are not using back in the package or clay keeper. It is advisable to also put a damp piece of sponge into the package with the clay to keep it moist. The clay should be wrapped loosely in plastic wrap so that the sponge and clay do not touch.

Bronze clay is completely non toxic and all fumes during firing are non toxic. If you experience any sensitivity to bronze clay, use latex gloves. Most people will never have a problem with it.

Clean fired and polished bronze clay with denatured alcohol and then seal with Protecta Clear to prevent oxidation over time.
Bronze clay can be purchased online at Rio Grande. They also sell kilns and other metal clay supplies.
Cool Tools sells the clay, a kit for bronze clay, kilns, pans, and coconut carbon required to fire bronze clay.
Bronze clay will stain your skin and clothing so it helps to use Gloves In A Bottle on your hands and to wear old clothing when using bronze clay. Let this dry and then always give your hands a light coating of olive oil or badger balm. Rub a light coat of olive oil onto your work surface and tools. This prevents the clay from sticking to your tools and fingers.
